The Detroit Warren Dearborn MSA had a strong economic recovery coming out of the pandemic. In fact, the metro saw its lowest unemployment rate of the last decade in 2023 at 3.6%, on track with the U.S. overall. Amid the pandemic, the annual unemployment rate in the region peaked at 11.6%, about 3.5 points higher than the national average. Over the last four years, the MSA has seen annual unemployment rates track with the nation, but rising slightly to 4.9% in 2025.
GDP (real, inflation-adjusted) in the Detroit metro increased $4 billion (1.2%) in 2024, a smaller increase than the three previous years. Overall GDP exceeded $348 billion. Real GDP has grown every year from 2014 to 2024, except 2020. Positive GDP growth of 2.0%, 5.2%, and 1.0% in each of the last three years signals a continued strengthening of the economy.
The Detroit Region contains 11 counties and has a population of 5.5 million people. The most populous county in the region is Wayne County with 1.8 million residents (32% of the population). This is followed by Oakland County with 1.3 million (24%) and Macomb County with 0.9 million (16%). Population has grown in eight out of the 11 counties in the region in the past decade, with Livingston County growing faster (5%) than any other county.
